Every year on March 21st, National Single Parent Day recognizes the mothers and fathers who shoulder the responsibilities of parenthood on their own. It’s a day to honor the hard work, devotion, and countless sacrifices that go into raising children without a partner—whether by choice or circumstance.

Parenting is challenging under the best of circumstances. Doing it alone doubles the load. Single parents juggle work, school schedules, daycare pickups, doctor visits, bills, meals, homework, and the emotional needs of their children—all while trying to carve out a little space for themselves. One person can only do so much, yet single parents somehow find a way to do it all.

A Community Effort

Many single parents find strength through family support. Grandparents, siblings, aunts, uncles, and close friends often step in to help, forming a network of love and stability. These extended families play a vital role, especially when the demands of daily life feel overwhelming.

According to the 2016 U.S. Census, 23% of American children live with a single mother, and 4% live with a single father. Behind those numbers are real families—each with its own story of resilience, creativity, and love.

A Personal Reflection

My brother and I grew up with our single father. We saw firsthand the long days, the sacrifices, and the determination it took to keep our home steady. We also saw the love—steady, unwavering, and always present. Single parents don’t just raise children; they shape them with strength, resourcefulness, and heart.

A Day to Celebrate and Support

National Single Parent Day is a reminder to:

  • Acknowledge the single parents in your life
  • Offer support—big or small
  • Celebrate the resilience that defines these families
  • Reflect on the stories and memories that shaped your own upbringing

Preserving the Stories of Single‑Parent Families

Every single‑parent household carries a unique story—one filled with challenges, triumphs, and moments worth remembering. Photos, home movies, handwritten notes, and family traditions all help preserve that legacy.

At Texas Hill Country Tales, I help families protect and celebrate those memories through digitization, restoration, and storytelling projects that honor the people who shaped us.

Here’s to the single parents who give everything they have, every single day.
